What are Invisible Aligners?

We use clear templates within an innovative orthodontic therapy that allows teeth to be aligned without metal brackets. In fact, this system uses a series of thin, clear plastic templates custom-built after a digital scan of the teeth (without impressions) that gently and progressively move the patient’s teeth toward the smile programmed at the outset.

Transparent templates take advantage of three-dimensional computerized technology that makes it possible to program the displacement of each individual tooth, according to a careful study performed on photographic and radiographic documentation and according to the patient’s wishes and expectations. Each set of templates is designed to be replaced after 1-2 weeks, with daily use of 20-22 hours.

How long has this technique of transparent masks existed?

In 1945, an American orthodontist, Dr. H.D.Kesling, hypothesized that one day modern technology would make it possible to use a series of tooth positioners to reproduce the movements required for orthodontic treatment. Align Technology has made this hypothesis a reality. Through state-of-the-art three-dimensional computerized technology, Align produces a series of custom-made aligners worn sequentially by the patient to produce the intended tooth movements.

How do aligners actually move the teeth?

Like fixed or removable metal braces, the templates move teeth by exerting a controlled force, making use of attachments, composite shims attached to the tooth surface, of the same color.
At each stage, only specific teeth are moved, and these movements are determined by the orthodontic treatment designed by the specialist. The result is an effective and controlled force distribution system.

How to start treatment with clear aligners?

Although its traditional field of use, is in adult dental misalignments, since March 2009, adolescents between the ages of 11 and 18 can also be treated.

During the first few days of template fitting, you may experience some tooth sensitivity, typically described as a slight pressure sensation. This is completely normal and indicates that the template is working to bring the teeth toward their final position. This sensation generally disappears after a few days.

Unlike with traditional orthodontic treatment, the templates must be removed during meals. One can then eat and drink whatever one wants. It is important, however, to always brush your teeth before reinserting the splint.

The best way is to use a toothbrush, warm water and some toothpaste or mild soap. Rinse well.

For how many hours should I wear the device during the day?

It is good to remember that in order to work properly, masks must be worn day and night except for eating and brushing teeth. Failure to wear them properly for the recommended time could compromise or delay the final result of the treatment.

Can I whiten my teeth while wearing clear masks?

If whitening treatment is not contraindicated in your case, whitening gels prescribed by your doctor, which do not interact with the trays, can be inserted to whiten the teeth as they move.

The orthodontist will set the appointment schedule as appropriate. Typically once every 3 to 6 weeks. Compared with traditional orthodontic therapy however, the duration of follow-up will be significantly reduced.

Teeth can move at any time of life, whether or not they have undergone orthodontic treatment. After orthodontic therapy, a “restraining” device is often worn at night to maintain and stabilize the teeth in the acquired position. Consultation with the orthodontist is recommended.
